Binding vs. Non-Binding Moving Estimates

This directory is operated by American National Movers LLC, a licensed household goods broker. Moving companies pay us to receive quote requests; that never affects ratings or reviews. How we stay fair ->

Binding estimate

A binding estimate is a written agreement on the price of the services listed. If you do not add items or services, you pay that amount.

Non-binding estimate

A non-binding estimate is the mover's approximation. Your final price is based on the actual weight of your shipment and the services provided. Under FMCSA rules, at delivery you cannot be required to pay more than 110% of a non-binding estimate; any remaining balance is billed later.

Binding not-to-exceed

Some movers offer a not-to-exceed estimate: you pay the estimate or the actual cost, whichever is lower.

Before you sign

  • Get the estimate in writing.
  • Make sure it lists every item and service you need.
  • Ask whether it is binding.
