How to Verify a Mover

This directory is operated by American National Movers LLC, a licensed household goods broker. Moving companies pay us to receive quote requests; that never affects ratings or reviews. How we stay fair ->

Interstate movers must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Before you hire one:

  1. Get the USDOT number. Ask the company for its USDOT number and, for interstate moves, its MC number.
  2. Look it up on FMCSA. Search the number on the FMCSA SAFER and Licensing & Insurance websites. Confirm the legal name and address match what the company told you.
  3. Check household goods authority. The company should have active authority to move household goods.
  4. Check insurance. Confirm liability and cargo insurance are on file and current.
  5. Carrier or broker? A broker arranges your move and hands it to a carrier. Ask for the carrier's name and USDOT number.
  6. Read the paperwork. You should receive a written estimate and the FMCSA booklet "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move".
